Beltane: May 1st The Sacred Marriage
Lord of the Green Wood - Queen of the May
The Sun God Bel (meaning god of light) weds the Goddess so she may complete the cycle and become the Great Mother once again, together they assume responsibility and a new season of life begins.
Beltane is celebrated by lighting fires in honor of the Great Ones and then jumping over one or passing between two to ensure fertility throughout the land. In times gone by cattle and livestock were led between the fires to purify and bless the coming seasons growth.
This Sabbat also includes the May Pole (a very phallic symbol) Dance. The pole representing the God and the Ribbons and flowers representing the Goddess. The Ritual dance is preformed to symbolically act out their union.
